Hmmm…

Well, I must say that wordpress.com does NOT do justice to the wonderful WordPress open source CMS platform available at wordpress.org. I’ve just discovered that Javascript is not supported here, which means I can’t have many of my fun widgets on this blog. Frankly, I’m much more impressed with blogger at this point, which makes me rather sad. I am very tempted to leave this blog as an archive of the posts from my old WP site jimspaulding.com, and focus more on working up a nice site at blogspot.com. I’m still playing with it all so we’ll see…

Winter is fast approaching here at 7000ft and my mind is beggining to turn towards artistic pursuits. I still have to go out and hustle up cash to pay my bills, but I can feel my focus moving inward. I have begun to experiment with Garageband on my Mac and am even tempted to do a little painting or sculpting. Again… We’ll see. If I come up with anything that I think might be interesting to anyone else I’ll post it. Maybe I’ll even put a podcast together with music and poetry….Hmmm:)

Oops

Well folks, I did it again. Another learning experience with WordPress. I deleted a database table that I shouldn’t have deleted and am just fortunate that I found an xml backup on my hard drive. Of course I found the sql backup right after that. But alas, it was too late. So here we are…. It feels kind of good to have another freshish start, and it gives me a little project to work on. It is now the witching hour(3am), though, and I think it is time for a little folding of the hands(sleep)…

The New Look

I have been contemplating changing themes lately, mainly because the LonelyTree theme does not want to properly nest comments. That is really my only gripe with the theme, and other than that, I think that the folks at Gauson Designs have done a great job. The Hybrid theme, which i am using now, is one that I have had my eye on for a while. I like the clean, minimalist look, and the flexibility of the theme. I will be experimenting with it over the next few weeks, so don’t be surprised if you see things disappearing and popping up elsewhere on the site. One thing that I’ve just noticed is that the Flickr Gallery(great plugin, by the way) page is not loading properly now. I don’t know if that is due to the new theme or not and will look into that over the next few days.

I have been very busy with daily life as of late and have not had much time to devote to this blog. What with work and Spring(Planting time!) I am lucky if I get everything done in a day, even with cutting sleep to about 6 hours on most nights. Se la vie. I am having a wonderful time with it all, so I do not mind:”Give a man a task and he will be content.” as the saying goes.

Last week I finally got to irrigate on my day off, and during the daylight hours too! Bodie and I made a lot of progress on the ditches in the yard, and soon I will be able to focus more on actual gardening now that the water is getting to where it needs to go and NOT getting to where it shouldn’t be. All of the trees are now gettings properly flooded. The evergreens are particularly thankful for this as they have been battling the bark beetle and the extra water will allow them to produce more sap to push the buggers out. The wheat and alfalfa growing wild in the yard have crested two feet now and do not look to be planning to slow down any time soon.

Well, I’d best get back to that daily life business I referred to as I’ve a bit more floor shining to do before work. Signing off for now…

Yslow Strikes Again, Almost.

Well I have managed to get my YSlow score up to 84 without needing to reinstall WordPress.  I did start getting 404 and 500 errors, but managed to work backwards and make a few life saving maneuvers.  The only thing I haven’t been able to make any real progress on is the whole CDN thing. I am not sure exactly how or where to implement the YUIs into my site.  I don’t know that it would even make much difference at this point as the site has very little content, but I am curious as to how it is done nonetheless.  I have managed to implement an expires header, GZIP some of my components, get the JS in the footer and the CSS in the header, reduce http calls, configure Etags to None, and a few other little tweaks.  If anyone happens to have Firebug installed I would be grateful for any advice.  Signing off…

Poetry Reloaded and Code

To all of my readers, especially those of you who subscribe to this feed:  My apologies for all of the drastic changes and loss of data recently.  My curiosity has gotten the better of me as of late and I managed to corrupt my WordPress install beyond my ability to repair it.  I learned a great deal in the process though, which was the point, so that is good.   I have always believed the saying “Code is poetry.” since I first saw it being written.  Recently I have had a more firsthand experience through my own dabblings in my cPanel and I am hooked.  It is not a metaphor or a simile: Code is poetry.  Period.  I thought getting hooked on haiku was bad but I fear that this is far worse.  How many new languages must I learn?  CSS, HTML, JavaScript, understanding the proper use of .htaccess, config files, Etags, CDNs, max age: headers, Sprites… ad infinitum.  Fascinating.  I will still continue to write in rhythym and rhyme, verse and haiku, but I have had a taste of the vast poetry of code and I cannot resist its allure.  Alas, who was it that said:  “To be a poet is not a profession, but a condition.”?
